Approximately 40 infants under the age of one die every day in Maharashtra, with two-thirds of these deaths occurring in newborns less than a month old. Prematurity, low birth weight, and respiratory distress are the leading causes of neonatal death. The rise in hospital deliveries, without a proportional increase in healthcare workforce and infrastructure, has contributed to the increase in infant mortality rates.
